Artisans Girls School

A learning and growth space for women to develop skills, independence, and self-confidence through the creative process.

What is Artisans Girls School?

The Artisans Women's School is a hands-on learning program designed for women who want to develop their textile and craft skills, while understanding the value of sustainability in production processes.

This program focuses not only on results, but also on the learning process, building self-confidence, and creating a safe space for women to grow together.

Why Is This Program Necessary?

Did #FriendsofWiji know that in the village there are many women of productive age who lack skills, and also lack access to jobs and other things?

Many of these women have potential and skills, but are limited by access to training, mentoring, and inclusive learning spaces.

Artisans Women's School is here to answer this need—providing learning opportunities that are applicable, relevant, and appropriate to the context of participants' lives.

Program Objectives

  • Providing marginalized women in villages with technical skills regarding textiles (batik, natural dyes, sewing, upcycling ).
  • Providing opportunities for women to actualize themselves, become economically independent, and have a greater role in the family and society.
  • Encourage women's independence and self-confidence.
  • Instilling awareness of responsible production processes.
  • Opening up opportunities for collaboration and income sustainability

Learning Activities

Learning materials

Hand-drawn and Stamped Batik

Participants at the Artisans Women's School learn batik techniques, both hand-drawn and stamped. The outcome of this course is that participants are able to independently produce batik that can be sold in collaboration with Ulur Wiji or sold independently.

Learning materials

Upcycle Products

This lesson on Upcycle Products aims to make participants of the Artisans Women's School aware that even waste fabric can be reprocessed and become more valuable items.

This fabric waste can be from Ulur Wiji's production waste or obtained from other sources. The products produced through this upcycling include a variety of accessories such as key chains, pouches , dolls, and other accessories.

Learning materials

Sew

Sewing is a skill that will always be needed. This sewing skills training material is especially suitable for women, as they can become productive with just a simple sewing machine.

In this Artisans Women's School program, participants learn pattern making, basic to advanced sewing skills, cutting fabric and other things.

The hope is that after participating in the program, participants can become Ulur Wiji's partners in sewing clothes, or be able to run their own businesses.
